From the Spring 2018 issue of El Salvador Watch

The past few months have seen a number of milestones in the case of El Mozote, the most infamous massacre of civilians from the dark days of El Salvador’s civil war. Long a priority for human rights defenders, the case was re-opened last year with the goal of finally getting some measure of justice and closure for the survivors and families of the victims.

As we have for every election since the signing of the 1992 Peace Accords, which ushered in a new democratic system in El Salvador, CISPES sent international observers to accompany the popular movement for the 2018 legislative and municipal election. Our group of 20 delegates, ranging from college students to life-long solidarity activists, prepared for Election Day by meeting with social movement organizations to understand what was at stake on March 4.

In a historic milestone for transparency and public accountability, the government of El Salvador published a full list of donors to all political parties from 2006 and 2017. The February 2018 report published by the Secretary of Participation, Transparency and Anti-Corruption provides critical new insights into how El Salvador’s political parties are funded and by whom.

In the context of the 2018 legislative and municipal elections, the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) was invited to bring a delegation of international and national observers to accompany the Salvadoran people in this important moment. CISPES is a grassroots organization based in the United States dedicated to supporting the Salvadoran people’s struggle for self-determination and has observed every electoral process in El Salvador since the signing of the 1992 Peace Accords.
