One of CISPES’ highest priorities is to recruit new activists to join the movement to end US intervention in Central America and, more importantly, give them the organizing skills that they need to help lead effective grassroots campaigns and provide opportunities to develop and deepen their political analysis. Every other year, we hold a national organizing skills training known as CISPES Summer Camp.

On September 22, Salvadoran President Salvador Sánchez Cerén declared New Trinidad in Chalatenango the 100th municipality in El Salvador to be “free of illiteracy.” As of early November, the total has grown to 111. This milestone in the hugely successful National Literacy Program, which shares a lifespan with the tenure of the FMLN administration, is a glimpse into the promise of this progressive government and reflects a coordinated effort between volunteers, a variety of national institutions, and local municipal governments.

Campaign season for El Salvador’s 2019 presidential elections began on October 2, following the Supreme Electoral Tribunal’s official convocation of the election for February 3. The following morning, the governing leftist party, the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) officially launched its campaign, “With the Strength of the People.” At dawn, FMLN members gathered to accompany Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates, Hugo Martínez and Karina Sosa as they visited street and market vendors across the capital.
