On June 26, the Attorney General of El Salvador, Raúl Melara, announced investigations of top Bukele administration officials after information surfaced from media outlets about a possible misuse of public funds during the COVID-19 emergency response. Despite repeated insistence from lawmakers, the Bukele administration has refused to abide by transparency requirements set by the Legislative Assembly intended to prevent embezzlement of public funds.

CISPES is calling on Congress to withdraw military aid and training to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Take action today!

During a nationally-televised address on June 13, President Nayib Bukele tried to gain public sympathy by telling the population that he had been betrayed by his opponents, who had initially agreed to his quarantine measures and later turned against them. Bukele's revelation came on the heels of a June 11 vote by the Legislative Assembly to override his presidential veto on a law to resume economic activity in El Salvador while maintaining public health measures.

The Committee In Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) affirms our solidarity with the uprisings throughout the country demanding an end to white supremacy and police violence. Policing institutions in this country are born from slavery and continue to serve the purpose of protecting the interests of the elite at the expense of the lives of the dispossessed.
