Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of San Salvador to demand that President-elect Nayib Bukele ally himself with working-class people, not with US and right-wing economic interests in the region.

This past week, the Institute for Human Rights at the University of Central America in El Salvador held its eleventh annual International Restorative Justice Tribunal. Each year, the tribunal reviews cases of human rights violations that occurred during the Salvadoran civil war.

Representatives from the Social Alliance for Governability and Justice (ASGOJU), a civil society organization that represents more than thirty organizations and social movements nationwide, held a press conference on April 5 to denounce actions taken by magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice and by El Salvador’s new Attorney General, Raul Melara, that, according to ASGOJU, “promote corruption and impunity.” Among the actions cited was a recent Supreme Court ruling to halt open embezzlement investigations if ten years had passed since the official’s time in office, functionally granting

In El Salvador as throughout the world, women and girls face a daily reality of violence, subordination, and exclusion. This reality intersects in especially brutal ways for women and girls who additionally occupy marginalized spaces of race, class, sexual identity, and disability, among others. As an emancipatory project, El Salvador’s feminist social movement has been increasingly powerful in drawing attention to the structural, capitalist roots of this reality and demanding that change occur at this level (liberal white feminism: take note).

President Trump's nominee for the next U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador is Ronald Johnson, a former military colonel who was stationed in El Salvador during the Civil War. Johnson is currently a CIA liaison to the U.S. Armed Forces Southern Command. This is a true cause for alarm given the devastation that U.S. militarization continues to cause throughout Central America and around the world.
