Washington, DC: The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) joins hundreds of religious, human rights, immigrant rights and labor organizations to resoundingly denounce the decision of the Department of Homeland Security to end the Temporary Protected Status designation for El Salvador.

Alexis Stoumbelis, Executive Director, said the following:

“This is a profoundly immoral decision from the Trump administration that will harm hundreds of thousands of Salvadoran people and families, as well as the communities in which they live. But it's clear that this decision has nothing to do with El Salvador, whose government has done everything possible to avoid this humanitarian disaster.

Leaders of both major political parties in the U.S. have expressed support for TPS. Big business interests like the Chamber of Commerce support this program. But the consequences - human or economic - don't matter to members of the Trump administration. The White House's decision demonstrates that all they care about is their dangerous agenda of closing off our country and getting rid of anyone who doesn't meet their racist definition of a white citizen.

We express our permanent solidarity with the Salvadoran people and our commitment to fighting xenophobia, racism and the deep social harms they cause. We will continue fighting to defend the full rights of every immigrant and for a legislative solution that will guarantee that all TPS holders are able to apply for permanent residency as they deserve the opportunity to do."
