Drop NAFTA and CAFTA, Destroying Land, Livelihoods and Liberty!

bulldozer.jpgNAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement – U.S., Canada and Mexico) and CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement) have had devastating effects -destroying the livelihoods of people in Mexico and Central America, displacing them off their lands, poisoning their environment and forcing them into peonage working in maquilas, as well as destroying family-supporting jobs in the United States.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit San Francisco . Let’s send him a message to carry out his campaign pledge of hope in renegotiating NAFTA and CAFTA.

Thursday, October 15

Committees have been the heart and soul of CISPES throughout our 28 years.  Committees are local groups that carry out national CISPES campaigns in support of the movement in El Salvador, and in opposition to US economic and military aggression toward Latin America. These groups carry out our on-the-ground organizing, which has been the foundation of our success over the decades.

Interning with a local committee has a lot of potential learning opportunities.  One valuable aspect of the position is that interns work closely with committee coordinators, who are happy to provide mentorship.  Our coordinators are seasoned activists with years of experience; they are chock-full of skills, and ready to share with those getting started in social justice work.  Working in a local office provides interns with a hands-on understanding of how grassroots organizing can really look, and how much power lies in the hands of passionate, informed, and coordinated communities.
