Seattle CISPES Solidarity Cycle 2009: June 20-21 PDF Print E-mail

Seattle CISPES - Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador - is excited to announce  the 2009 Solidarity Cycle bicycle trip on June 20-21. This year's cycle will feature ferry rides on both days, and lots of scenic riding along the Puget Sound and through rural and agricultural areas. The route goes from Seattle to Tacoma and back, with travel south on the Kitsap Peninsula (via the Southworth Ferry) on Saturday, June 20, and north on Vashon Island on Sunday, June 21. The route is 35-45 miles each day, with some hilly terrain. However, we won't be in a hurry, and we anticipate that cyclists of varying skill levels will participate. We will stay overnight in Tacoma on the 20th.

SO, HOW DOES THIS WORK?

2) We need your signed registration form and $20 registration fee by Friday, June 5th. (The $20 covers all of your expenses: food, ferry fare, Solidarity Cycle t-shirt, overnight lodging, support vehicle expenses... pretty good deal, huh?) Print, sign and mail the form, along with your $20, to Seattle CISPES, or call our office to make arrangements to turn it in in person. Checks should be made to "Seattle CISPES." Also, call us if you want to pay your $20 fee with a credit card:

If you are already sure you will be taking part in the cycle, please let us know ASAP so we can begin to get a better estimate of how many cyclists to plan for. In any case, you must turn in your registration form and $20 by June 5th.

3) In exchange for taking part in the bike ride - and to help continue the struggle for justice and democracy in El Salvador - we ask each cyclist to raise at least $100 for Seattle CISPES. 60% of this money will be sent to fund grassroots social justice organizations that CISPES works with in El Salvador. 40% will stay here to fund our local organization. The easiest way to raise money is by asking your friends and family for pledges. We will give you a pledge sheet to help you keep track of your fundraising, and can help you come up with other fundraising ideas. Turn in your $100 (or more!) when you come to the Solidarity Cycle on the morning of Saturday, June 20th.

In solidarity,

- Dirección de Ciclismo de Seattle CISPES (Seattle CISPES Cycling Directorate)

Seattle CISPES Summer 2009 internship positions PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 21 April 2009

**Application deadline: May 4**

  • Organizational capacity building

  • Web-based organizing and development
  • CISPES National Convention coordination

Seattle CISPES – Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador – is pleased to announce volunteer internship opportunities for the summer of 2009. Interns will work with CISPES staff and volunteers on a variety of projects that have been identified as priorities by CISPES leadership, and will be assigned according to the interns' skills, experience and interests. Specific project areas are listed below. Please visit www.cispes.org to learn more about our organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES & COMMITMENT

This internship opportunity is for 15-30 hours per week during the summer. The intern’s schedule and specific areas of responsibility (within the project areas listed below) are flexible and can be arranged with CISPES staff, depending upon the intern’s availability and interests. The positions begin in May or June, depending upon the availability of the intern. End date is also flexible depending upon availability. Though we are unable to provide compensation for interns, we are committed to helping interns find affordable housing, and hours can be arranged around another job.

CISPES interns should be self-motivated, eager to take on responsibility, and comfortable working both independently and in collaboration with a small group of volunteers.

PROJECT AREAS

1) Organizational capacity building

·                    Working with volunteers, update CISPES' computer database of members, supporters and donors.

·                    Coordinate 'Monthly Sustainer Drive,' working with volunteers and CISPES members to recruit more monthly donors to the organization.

·                    Develop 'Emergency Action Phone Tree' system to be used to respond to urgent human rights situations in El Salvador and in our local community.

·                    Coordinate 'New Member Orientation' program that is ready to be launched.

2) Web-based organizing and development

·                    Work to develop a Seattle CISPES website, blog, and other tools to increase the online visibility of the organization and enhance our organizing capacity. (NOTE: Interns working on this project do NOT need to be web designers. This work could entail finding and coordinating with a web designer in the Seattle area to create a website. However, computer literacy will be valuable for this position.)

3) CISPES National Convention coordination (2 people)

·                    CISPES will host its bi-annual National Convention in Seattle August 7-9. This position entails working with a committee of volunteers to coordinate the logistics for the convention. We expect up to 60 people from around the U.S. and El Salvador to attend the convention.

·                    Areas of planning include: Food, lodging, venue(s) for convention meetings, transportation, preparing printed materials for convention delegates, public 'Convention Kick-Off' event
