As the people of Honduras struggle to hang on to their democracy andthe rest of Latin America and the world condemn the military coup, willthe US accept the status quo? Or will there be real pressure to restoreconstitutional order? Will the region move further toward democracy asin El Salvador, where the FMLN just took Presidential power through theMarch elections, or are we moving back toward an era of repressivemilitary rule. Learn about the different political forces at work inHonduras and how they are playing out through the period leading up toand including the coup. Hear about the consequences for the rest of theregion and what people are hoping to accomplish through the recentvictory in El Salvador.
The recent victory of the FMLN presidential candidateMauricio Funes is an historic victory for the Salvadoran people, but its impactgoes beyond the boundaries of a small Central American nation. Tens ofthousands gave their lives to make this victory possible. A generation of NorthAmerican activists joined the Central American Solidarity movement in the1980s, while hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans immigrated North America toescape poverty and violence. Come to a discussion to assess and reflect on theimpact and implications of this historic event on the immigrant, Salvadoran-Americancommunity and progressive activists in the US.

April 2nd at 7:30 at the Brecht Forum
451 West St (at Bank) in Manhattan

Presented in Collaboration with WBAI's Wake Up Call, and NY CISPES, thisspecial community forum is a retrospective film screening and panel discussionwhere filmmakers, activists and scholars will get together to discuss the U.S.role in Latin America, and how grassroots, solidarity organizing by U.S.activists has made a difference in resisting those policies. We willspecifically examine how video and other popular media forms have been used asa tool of resistance and solidarity.

Recent elections in El Salvador put the FMLN – the former guerilla group andlong-time opposition movement – in control of the government after years ofright wing domination, supported by Washington. In Colombia, the indigenous andpopular Minga of 2008 has sparked a renewed call for broad-based change in acountry that for years has been dominated by repressive, militarist leaders. Inboth these countries, as in other parts of the region, social movement activistshave used video technology and other alternative media to promote their callsfor change. As part of Deep Dish TV's commitment to using media as a toolfor community empowerment, panelists will discuss some of the lessons learnedover the last 20 years of resistance and solidarity, and their efforts toresist militarism, corporate globalization and U.S. interventionism in thehemisphere.
